Wartburg Wins Iowa Conference Title-Softball Falls At Regionals

Bolstered by a complete game outing from junior Jerrold Martijn of Oranjestaud, Aruba, Wartburg College clinched the Iowa Conference’s automatic bid to the 2008 NCAA Division III baseball tournament Saturday, May 10. Martijn, increasing his record to 4-3, kept fifth-seeded Loras off balance throughout Wartburg’s 10-2 win in the ultimate championship game at Veterans Memorial Stadium. He struck out eight and surrendered only seven hits.

No. 8-ranked Wartburg got out to a quick start Sunday, May 11, but it wasn't quite enough to thwart another late rally by UW-Whitewater in NCAA Division III regional play. The Knights saw a sixth straight 30-win season close with a 7-3 loss to the Warhawks at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. Senior first baseman Ashley Rogers of Dubuque drilled her 10th home run of the season, topping a three-for-four effort at the plate.
